I've taken off the seat a few times trying to suss out the best locations for 'additional features' and noticed a bit of residue at the front of the airbox, there's a hose running through/under the bracket holding the rear of the tank and down the brake side of the airbox... I'm assuming this is some of that Evaporative Loss Control System thinger... Is there a 'standard' reason this would be happening, or is this hose stuffed?

Yellow section from this diagram..

That looks like the fuel tank vent hose

same thing, either goes to ground, or for those in CA, it goes to a canister to save a few leaves.

Have you ever noticed any residue there?
I'm fairly certain it's fuel, so not sure if it's a 'normal' oddity or a stuffed hose.

I mean, it is close to the airbox, maybe it's a primitive A/F enrichment technique Triumph was trying on?

Or the locating tab for the seat has pinched it..... I can't find a split, but I am loath to pull the tank unless it's truly required.

It may not be the hose, there is a reasonably common fault with the tank where a spot weld fails and causes a minor weep. It is located under that bracket that has the rear bolt through it. Mine had the leak, I cut the bracket off so I could mig weld around the plate that is spot welded on, then welded the bracket back on. To be certain that I had fixed the leak I also coated the tank interior with Redkote sealer.

I'm not sure if I'm alone on this one, but I've never been a fan of welding an explosive receptacle....

Here's to hoping it's the far cheaper option of a shagged hose, but on a sub 10k km bike, I'm not liking my chances..

There is a process that works, I am still here, the tank is quite accessible for flushing out with the fuel pump and sender assemblies removed.

Oh, I don't doubt that.... I'm neither equipped, skilled in welding, nor really wanting to fork out the money for said work, but if it needs doing I'll have to..
did you have to do much regarding the paint? or did you just 'who gives a shit, it's underneath' and give it enough to inhibit rust?

Still hoping it's just a hose....

The paintwork under the tank is pretty sketchy anyway, I just masked off the area and painted it in zinc black.

Sounds good.
Is it just the gasket that needs replacing if I remove the pump etc for cleaning/welding/painting? or is there anything else that's cactus once removed?

No, all rubber gaskets can be reused. The Redkote product is very good, it would probably seal the area on it's own if you want to chance it. Hopefully it isn't the problem.

Just pulled the seat again and there's a bit more than I cleaned off last time and the smell of it lingering tells me it's fresh...
I wouldn't be so phased by it if I hadn't just forked out 3 small deer and a kidney for the fill.

What's the best way to drain it?

you will have to ride it or siphon it out.or you can remove the tank and then tip it out.

Syphon is probably best.

It's probably coming from a failed spot weld under that plate. I cut the tongue off, mig welded all the way around the bracket then welded the tongue back on.

Do you think I'd get away with just a Red Kote job, or would this be likely to expand and tear?

I was pretty impressed with the product, your call, do some research on it.

Finally getting around to this, dropping it off to a mate on come Friday.
What paint can I use? Enamel? Regular rattle can affair? High heat etc?

The repair should not effect the top coats of paint so any decent spray can paint should be fine. I used a zinc rich paint from a pressure can for anti rust properties.

Triumph's touch up paint is acrylic lacquer. I believe factory paint is, too, but I don't know that.
As I recall from the old car painting days, you can put lacquer over enamel, but enamel on top of lacquer makes a mess.
Test a spot to be sure it dries properly.

Not entirely sure how he'll tackle it yet, I'm fairly sure he'll solder it, but I'll let him know there's a seam under the plate that could be the issue and see what he thinks.

Yeah, I remember that vaguely, however from the model building days. XD

Sounds like this one should do the trick.

The factory paint is Two Pack acrylic enamel, clear over base. If it was acrylic lacquer it would be susceptible to damage from mild chemicals etc, this product was fazed out in the 80's for automotive purposes. Triumph may have changed to newer technology, water based spray paints.
